The year 2024 has brought renewed attention to the health of Vladimir Putin. With no clear alternative for regime change in Russia, the focus on Putin’s longevity has become a crucial element in discussions about the country’s future.

Public Absences and Health Rumors

At 72, Putin’s age is increasingly relevant, particularly in a nation where the mechanisms for a stable transfer of power remain underdeveloped. Over the past year, two significant instances of his prolonged absence from the public eye have fueled speculation. In one notable case, Putin reportedly spent nearly two weeks at the Central Clinical Hospital (CCH), which Kremlin sources described as a routine medical check-up.

The narrative surrounding Putin’s health has been carefully controlled and largely absent from public discourse since political analyst Valery Solovey’s controversial claim that Putin had died at Valdai in October 2023. Although these allegations were widely dismissed, they have left an enduring mark on public conversations about the Russian leader.

Changing Image and New Narratives

While discussions about Putin’s health have subsided, they have been replaced by stories of his alleged fatherhood. Western media outlets, often citing anonymous leaks, have highlighted claims about Putin’s two young sons and his purported excellent health. Many believe these narratives are part of a Kremlin-backed effort to shape public perception. Putin has even contributed to these stories, sharing personal anecdotes about his younger family members learning Chinese and enjoying Russian folklore.

Simultaneously, Putin’s public image has undergone a transformation. Once known for his active engagement in sports, he has significantly reduced such appearances and seems to have abandoned his earlier reliance on cosmetic treatments. His recent public appearances show a leader who is visibly aging.

Adding to the intrigue are reports of Putin and his inner circle’s growing interest in shamanic rituals and mysticism. These developments, while speculative, contribute to the broader narrative of uncertainty surrounding the future of Russia’s long-standing leader.

One might have thought that Zhirinovsky’s death would also erase the very logic of the LDPR’s existence — a party built around a single person. But in a system where symbols often matter more than institutions, death is not the end of a political career. It is its next phase.
