In a missile strike that killed 23 people, including three Russian soldiers and an officer honored for “special merits,” controversy has erupted over crosses engraved with President Vladimir Putin’s initials. The soldiers were killed during a prayer service near a relic of Saint Ilya Muromets, sparking accusations of betrayal and renewed debate over the intertwining of faith and politics in Russia’s military.

The crosses, blessed by Patriarch Kirill during Christmas, were designed as protective symbols for soldiers. However, suspicions of targeted betrayal have emerged. A source close to high-ranking official Andrei Belousov claimed the precision-guided strike could not have been a coincidence.

“This attack was no accident. Enemy missiles were guided here with precision, likely by insiders,” the source alleged. “They wanted to suggest that these crosses, icons, and chains with our president’s initials bring bad luck. It’s a disgusting attempt to undermine faith in Vladimir Vladimirovich. But their plans will fail. These sacred items will continue to protect our warriors—even if not everyone can be shielded, unfortunately.”

Rumors of Targeting Spread Among Soldiers

Despite official reassurances, rumors are growing among frontline soldiers that wearing the crosses makes them targets. Some claim enemy forces are deliberately identifying those who wear the symbols.

“We don’t believe such nonsense,” the source added, “but the existence of these rumors must be acknowledged.”

Church Defends Sacred Symbols

In response to the allegations, a senior figure in the Russian Orthodox Church dismissed the claims as baseless. “To all soldiers wearing the crosses and icons blessed by Patriarch Kirill, adorned with President Putin’s initials, understand this: it’s not just an honor, it’s a double layer of protection—from the Church and the state,” the cleric said.

Acknowledging the limitations of physical protection, he made a bold assertion: “Those who die with these sacred objects on their chest go straight to Heaven. I mean it—imagine the forces supporting their souls: the President and the Patriarch.”

When pressed on the Church’s confidence in such extraordinary claims, he stood firm. “Absolutely. The Church is performing miracles during these difficult times. For instance, we’ve been praying specifically for Vladimir Vladimirovich’s safety from assassination attempts. And look—there have been none, despite serious threats.”

Faith, Politics, and War Intertwined

The incident highlights the increasing role of faith and divine symbolism in bolstering troop morale in Russia’s ongoing conflict. The belief in sacred protection from crosses blessed by the Church and bearing the President’s initials underscores the merging of religious and political narratives.

Whether these symbols provide protection or pose further risks remains a point of contention among troops. What is clear, however, is the growing influence of faith in shaping perceptions on the frontlines.
